About two centuries ago, an impressiveyesidence block that became the landmark of aristocracy in Corfu Old Town was erected. Today, the famous Liston Square is still the most cosmopolitan part of the island and accessible to all. It is said, although it is probably an urban legend, that on its high street (nowadays called Liberty Boulevard) only the aristocrats of that era were allowed to walk; this was a trend that came from Paris known as "Boulevard" that meant elegant and delimited urban promenade. The buildings lining the "square have elegant ground floor arcades that were created by the Imperial French during their second period of occupation of the island (1807 -1814) and were primarily used as barracks.

Full Description: Liston is said to have been designed by the French architect Lesseps who was influenced by the architects Perscier and Fontain who designed the arcade of Rue de Rivoli in Paris. However, there is evidence nowadays that the Corfiot mechanic Ioannis Parmezan (1748-1827) was key in the design ot Liston Sguare. The French were planning to build up to the other end of the square, where the statue of loannis Kapodistrias is now today but because of the English Occupation (1815 - 1864) they did not manage to carry this out. Thus, construction was continued during the English Occupation, expanding the arcades as well as adding more floors.
Since 1882, consulates (the Austrian and the Turkish) as well as the first noteworthy hotel of Corfu and Greece, the "British Hotel" were housed there. Nowadays, at the ground floor of Li ston, numerous cafes and restaurants operate whereas at the upper floors there are residential houses and offices. Its name, "Liston Square". possibly comes from the words "Lista" and "Lizza" which in the Venetian dialect originally denoted a part of the road in front of an ambassadors' house which was designated by white flagstones. As time went by, the word Liston was identified with this flagstone longwise delimitation and later on as a promenade and somewhere to socialize; it also implies anything that it is straight and repeated. It is no coincidence that in San Marco Square in Venice there is an area called Liston named after the straight and broad promenade and there are many other "Liston Streets" (Via Liston) in many areas of Italy. Of course, before Corfu Liston was named thusly and before it could be compared to the other Listons of Italy, it took many years for local society to accept and establish this arcade as a place to stroll and socialize. Another less popular version concerning the origin of the name states that it comes from the 18th century word "Liston" which back then referred to a wooden construction created for the arrival ceremony of the new Intendant (Higher Official of Venice) of the island which was set up on the road that unites the Old Fortress with Corfu Town.
Liston is nowadays a focal point of Corfu and most of the events of the town are ceremoniously held there. Every parade and procession of the town goes through there as well as Philharmonic orchestras and folk singers perform there. Locals and visitors to the island go there daily from early in the morning till late at night to enjoy a coffee, snack or a drink all year round. Liston Square is located in a truly special part of Corfu Town; it is just one step away from the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon. It is surrounded by the Old Fortress, the Palace, the Old Town and the Esplanade, i.e the Upper and Lower Square of the town which is also the largest square in Greece and the Balkans. It is a historically-significant square that was designed by the Venetian conquerors so they could have better visibility and so they could organize the Old Fortress defense. This required the demolishing of about 2,500 houses in 2.5 years beginning in 1576 till the square's final form in 1628. It was called "the Esplanade" from the Italian "spianare" which means "demolish" and the square was later adorned with trees by the French. The English Commissioners added the cricket field and the amazing Palace of Saints Michael and George which nowadays houses the unique in Greece Museum of Asian Art.
A promenade in Corfu Liston Square will take you back to other eras, more romantic and hopeful. During Easter, it is decorated with purple lights and i a landmark for visitors from all over Greece. The Venetian, French and English buildings around it catch any visitor's attention and they are truly remarkable. Many people admire Liston Square for its European atmosphere and compare it favourably to cities in France and Italy. Personally, as a romantic Greek, I believe that Liston carries an authentic Corfiot identity. It is a palette for the past of Corfu, its history and its conquerors; conquerors who appreciated this special part of Greece and respected it in the best way something we modern Greeks seem to have forgotten.
